McRAE, GEORGIA – Tom K. Smith, McRae attorney, churchman, and businessman, died in Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta on Saturday, January 29, 2011.  He was a leader in legal, religious, civic, and business activities in McRae and in Telfair County for many years.
Mr.  Smith was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson Smith, Jr., and the late Lucile Kinnebrew Smith, and the brother of the late Thomas Jefferson Smith III.  He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sarah Jane Nix Smith; his son Thomas Kinnebrew Smith, Jr., of Manhattan Beach, California; and his daughter Sarah McArthur Smith and granddaughter Elizabeth McArthur Amsbary, both of Atlanta.
He was born on April 1, 1933, at Suomi Crossing in Dodge County.  During his youth, he was active in scouting and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.  He was educated at Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, where he served as a Prefect, lettered in football and wrestling, and graduated as Salutatorian.
In 1955, Mr. Smith graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Public and International Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School.  He was a member of the University Cottage Club and the Glee Club, as well as of the Naval Reserve Officer’s Training Corps.  He served in the Navy aboard the USS Robert L. Wilson and as an Executive Officer.
He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1968 and practiced law with the firm of Jones, Cork, Miller, & Benton in Macon, Georgia, for several years.
Mr. Smith has practiced law in McRae and the surrounding area since 1972.  He served as President of the Oconee Bar Association, and he was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.  He served as the attorney for Telfair County and as Attorney and Director of the Merchants and Citizens Bank in McRae, and he was active in forestry.
Throughout his life Mr. Smith was an active member and leader of the McRae United Methodist Church, where he was a long-time Sunday School teacher.  He was also a member of the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta and a member and past president of the McRae Rotary Club.
Services were held at Oak Grove Cemetery in McRae, at 2 pm on Monday, January 31.
