Galen Leigh Peterson, 55, of McRae, died Tuesday, July 29. Visitation will be held from 1:30-2:30P.M., Thursday, July 31, at Scotland Baptist Church. The funeral service and burial will be private.
A native of Hapeville, Galen lived most of her life in Telfair County. She attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College from 1976-1977, then Middle Georgia College until 1979, and from 1989-1990 completed classwork toward a 4-year nursing degree at Gordon College.
Well known for her caring, compassionate nature as a nurse, her unselfish nursing expertise would prove critical in later years while caring for her terminally ill father and Aunt Margaret.
Galen’s medical knowledge was astounding. One of her favorite pass-times was researching medical issues in her Merck Manual and Physician’s Desk Reference. She was a member of the Georgia Licensed Practical Nurses Association and a loyal sponsor of Faithful Hearts Animal Shelter. Her love of animals began as a young girl with her cherished horses then extended to all animals, including her beloved dogs, Bingo and Timber.
Galen was preceded in death by her father, John A. Peterson, IV, a sister, Helen Peterson Ellzey, and a great-aunt, Margaret Talmadge Shepherd.
Survivors include her mother, Alice Willis Peterson, brother and sister, John A. Peterson, V, and Mitsy Peterson, all of McRae.
