Evelyn Joyce Stafford, born on October 2, 1955, in Macon, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025, in Vidalia, Georgia. A dedicated correctional officer, Evelyn exemplified unwavering commitment and strength throughout her career, earning the respect of her colleagues and community alike.
Joyce was a remarkable individual known for being a hard-working matriarch and a steadfast support to those around her. She was often referred to as "everyone's nana," providing a safe haven for family and friends alike. Her spirit of sacrifice and generosity left a profound impact on all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Throughout her life, Joyce was an active and devoted member of the Oak Grove Church of God, where her faith and values deeply influenced her interactions with others. Her character and personality resonated with many, as she was a source of strength, comfort, and wisdom.
Joyce is survived by her loving daughter, Teresa Howell of Vidalia, and her cherished grandchildren, Mellissa (Andrue) Brown, Melody (Patrick) Knies, and Paul Asbell. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Lakelyn Knies, Arya Knies, Raiyah Brown, and Cohen Brown. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and friends who will fondly remember her nurturing spirit, as well as her brothers, Robert (Sheila) Herrington of Alamo and Henry (Jennifer) Herrington of California
She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Evelyn Collins, as well as her brothers and sister: Herman Burkhalter, Daniel Burkhalter, James Burkhalter, Mary Herrington, and Wendell Burkhalter.
The family is honoring Joyce's memory with a visitation scheduled for March 3, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Vaughn Funeral Home, located at 107 E. Oak Street, McRae, GA 31055. A funeral service will follow on March 4, 2025, commencing at 1:00 PM, also at Vaughn Funeral Home, with interment to take place afterwards.
Evelyn Joyce Stafford will be remembered as a pillar of strength, love, and compassion. She leaves a legacy that will endure in the hearts of her family and all whose lives she touched.
