Doris (Gothard) Mountjoy

Doris Gothard Mountjoy was born in Perry, Florida on June 19, 1930.  She was the second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Gothard of Thomasville, Georgia, where she attended Thomasville public schools, graduating from Thomasville High School in 1948.  Mrs. Mountjoy was honored to be selected the First Rose Show Queen in 1948.
She graduated from Valdosta State College in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics and shortly after graduation, became the Home Economist for Georgia Power in the McRae District.
Mrs. Mountjoy met the new high school basketball coach, Lawrence Mountjoy in McRae, whom she married in 1953.  She returned to VSC to earn certification in elementary education and began her teaching career at McRae-Helena School.
Continuing her education at the University of Georgia, she received her Masters in Education in 1968.  She later earned certification in Library Science and was a teacher and librarian for 31 years in Telfair County.
Mrs. Mountjoy was an active member of McRae United Methodist Church for over 50 years, was a lifetime member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association and an active member of the local TWREA.  She was a long time member of the Thursday Night Bridge Club in McRae.
Mrs. Mountjoy moved to a retirement community in Macon, Georgia in 2013, where she attended Mulberry United Methodist Church, was a member of the Joy Class and Paula Moates UMC Circle.  She also volunteered in the clothing room for the Methodist Children’s Home for their residents.
In 2019 Mrs. Mountjoy moved to Wesley Woods of Newnan and was active in all the activities offered there.
She is survived by her twin daughters, Laura Mountjoy Meredith (John) and Linda Mountjoy Winn (Keith); five grandchildren, Jonathan Winn, Zachary Winn, Janie Loeppke (Jason), Brad Meredith (Kara) and Max Meredith; five great-grandchildren, Blakely Winn, Gentry Winn, Ward Loeppke, Laurel Loeppke and Tatum Rose Meredith.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00A.M., Saturday, April 6, at McRae Methodist Church with burial at Telfair Memorial Gardens.  Visitation is one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McRae Methodist Church, P.O. Box 8, McRae-Helena, GA 31055.
