Roy Mitchell Yawn, 95, formerly of Telfair County, was born January 20, 1928, to Henry and Estella Yawn. By the time his birth was registered the legal birth certificate stated he had no middle name and the date was listed as January 22, 1928. Roy was the second oldest of seven children. He graduated from Milan High School, class of 1944. Initially he worked for an electrical company in Macon prior to joining the U.S. Coast Guard in May, 1948. Roy served over 20 years and retired as Chief Engineer (E7). During his time of service he met and married Edith Tilton (Yawn) and they had four children. After Roy retired from the Coast Guard he began working as a mechanic for private boat companies and boat owners. After retiring a second time, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by loving son, Mitchell.
He is survived by his son, Richard "Ricky"; daughter, Lori Atkins and her husband, Charles; son David and wife, Lisa; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Vira and her husband, Raleigh; Edith and her husband, Hal; brothers, Henry and his wife, Linda; and James and his wife, Gail; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved by extended families, the Atkins and the Streets.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00P.M., Sunday, August 6, at Rockwell Baptist Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
